As you know, the oxygen you breath is absolutely essential for your survival.  The average person can survive without any oxygen only about four to six minutes (before permanent brain damage occurs and death occurs shortly thereafter).  Unfortunately, many people do not understand the importance of proper water consumption and consequently take it for granted that most beverages are satisfactory for hydrating trillions of body cells properly. 

The truth is that many beverages are not nearly as good for hydrating trillions of body cells as clean water.  A brief explanation follows about important pH issues that can dramatically affect your longterm health.  This information can help you understand the great importance of drinking clean water in preference to most other beverages.  

Water is the second most important substance consumed daily by humans - second only to oxygen.  The typical person could survive about 20 - 30 days without any food but would likely die if no water was consumed for 5 - 10 days (dependent upon environmental factors and several other variables).  Consequently, one can easily see that water is much more important than food for sustaining life during a 30 day period of time. 

Note:  You can survive without oxygen for about 4 - 6 minutes (severe brain damage and death can occur).  

Our general lack of knowledge about proper healthy cell hydration is shown by the fact that many Americans routinely drink very little water but drink carbonated beverages on a frequent basis, as if such beverages could hydrated the body properly.  However, carbonated beverages are not good for the body in several respects.  Lon has been avoiding carbonated beverages for many years, ever since he started learning about pH values - way back in 1980.  Lon understands that carbonated beverages generally have a pH value between 2.5 and 4.0, making them very acidic.  He therefore has good reasons for believing that carbonated beverages are detrimental to many body functions and to overall health.  

NOTES about pH values:  The pH of a liquid substance is a measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of the liquid.  The symbol pH means potential of Hydrogen or potential Hydrogen.  The pH scale starts at 0 (extremely acidic) and ends at 14 (extremely alkaline).  Battery acid is extremely acidic and common Lye is very alkaline - both substances are capable of causing severe damage to your skin (burn type injury).   

With that basic pH information, It is important to understand that it is necessary to have an acid in the solution in order to enable the carbonation chemical action.  Most carbonated beverages contain either a phosphoric acid or a citric acid, and you can usually find the type of acid listed in the ingredients information on the beverage container.  The acidic pH of carbonated beverages can interfere with the body's normal efforts to maintain the proper pH value for body fluids, especially in the blood system.  

Acidic beverages can be harmful to many body functions, including being very detrimental to the bones because the autonomic nervous system can be forced to take calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, etc. (alkalizing minerals) from other locations in the body, including the bones, and deliver these alkalizing minerals to the blood system in order to quickly bring the pH of the blood back into the proper range (7.4 is desired).   Consequently,  when one consumes beverages or foods (flesh foods and grains primarily) that cause the blood pH to move toward the more acidic level, this pH balancing process is automatically activated by the autonomic nervous system.  This pH balancing process is going on constantly throughout each day of your life because the autonomic nervous system must attempt to keep the pH of your blood fluid at 7.4 + or - .05 at all times.  If the pH gets outside of this tolerance range, you are in big trouble and could have a heart attack and die rather quickly.  Consequently, Lon believes that drinking carbonated drinks is sort of like playing Russian roulette with your blood pH and your heart.  He does not drink any carbonated drinks.

With this basic explanation about vital pH issues, you can understand why the body systems prefer that you drink clean water (typical pH of 7.0 + or - 0.5) rather than some acidic beverage such as alcoholic drinks (worst choice), carbonated drinks, coffee, or even black tea.  Coffee and tea are not as acidic as carbonated beverages, and they can also contain beneficial antioxidants, but these beverages do not hydrate trillions of body cells nearly so well as clean water (H2O).  Consequently, reasonable amounts of coffee or tea can provide some additional antioxidant health benefits to the body, and hydrate trillions of body cells somewhat, but at a hydration level that is substantially less than what clean water can provide. 

DISINFECTANT CHEMICALS IN MUNICIPAL WATER SYSTEMS

Drinking adequate amounts of clean healthful water at frequent intervals throughout the day is very important to body cell health and vitality. It is necessary for municipalities to disinfect water to minimize the risk of waterborne diseases, but it is not necessary for you to drink or bath in the disinfectant chemicals contained in most municipal water supply systems.  When the water gets to your kitchen faucet or your bath faucet, you should reduce the chemical levels as much as can be accomplished in a practical and cost-effective manner.

HEALTH DAMAGE CONSIDERATION:  Have you considered the longterm potential effects on your health from routinely drinking low levels of toxic disinfectant chemicals, or bathing in water containing said chemicals?  Lon Willoughby's extensive studies convinced him that those chemicals may contribute substantially to a reduction of overall health and may be important factors in the high heart disease and cancer rates that have developed in America during the past 50 to 70 years.  Lon's studies about health issues during the past 35+ years enabled him to understand that low levels of disinfectant chemicals in drinking water, bathing water, and swimming pools may be significant contributing factors in many disease conditions.

Lon found that scientific studies have linked chlorine and chlorination byproducts (chloroamines, etc.) to cancer of the bladder, liver, stomach, rectum, and colon, as well as heart disease, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), anemia, high blood pressure, and allergic reactions.

Lon's studies enabled him to understand that the presence of chlorine and ammonia as disinfectants in water supplies can cause chloroamines to develop which may be substantially harmful when ingested daily over a period of months/years. There is evidence that chlorine can severely damage proteins in the body and can cause substantial adverse effects to the skin and hair.

Although chlorine is added to municipally supplied drinking water to kill pathogenic microorganisms, this highly reactive chemical (a halogen) can combine with fatty acids and carbon fragments to form a variety of toxic compounds, which comprise about 30% of the resulting chlorination byproducts.

Many warning statements have been issued by qualified researchers regarding the potential for harmful health effects due to chlorinated water. However, the public at large and many government officials do not understand the potential dangers associated with chlorinated water (for drinking water, bathing water, and swimming pools).

A good quality single stage POU water filter can greatly reduce the level of chlorine, ammonia, and many other potentially harmful chemicals that may get into "drinking water" supplies (costs less than $100). A double stage or triple stage water filtration unit can do a much better job of cleaning the water, with more reliability than a single stage unit. Because the filter elements need replacement only once per year (1,000 gallons), these units can be less expensive in the long run than the low cost small faucet mounted water filters.

COST COMPARISON:  Calculate the costs for 1,000 gallons of filtered water with a pitcher type filter or a faucet mounted unit that needs filter replacement at 40 or 100 gallon intervals respectively. Add up these costs, averaged over a three-year period, and the larger single stage, double stage, or triple stage units will likely cost less while doing a better job of cleaning your drinking water more reliably.

A sophisticated "water purifier" can do an excellent job, with a high level of reliability, of providing clean and healthful drinking and cooking water in a home or office.  This could be a Multiple Filter System with an Ultraviolet Purifier Stage,  or a Distiller Unit with filters, or a Reverse Osmosis System (also contains filters).  An under-counter type RO system should have an ultraviolet purifier stage added.  Any under-counter filter unit or system should also have a leak detector unit installed to help prevent substantial water damage if a leak should occur within the under-counter unit or in the connecting plastic water line. 

WATER FILTER UNIT OR SYSTEM:  A "water filter" does not generally qualify as a "water purifier", but a good quality water filter can improve the quality of water substantially when it is used properly. It can do a good job of reducing chlorine and ammonia disinfectant chemicals by as much as 90 - 98% for the rated life of the filter.  In general, filters do not significantly reduce fluoride type chemicals in the municipal supplied water;  however, Lon's research found an excellent fluoride reduction filter that can reduce this toxic chemical by about 93 - 96% for the rated life of the filter (500 gallons filtered, or six months of daily use - whichever situation occurs first).

HEALTH NOTICE:  It is very important for water to flow through a carbon water filter slowly (1/2 gallon per minute or less). The filter media must have sufficient contact time with the water molecules to enable reliable adsorption of various chemical contaminants that may be in the water.

HEALTH NOTICE: It is also very important for a water filter to be "flushed" first thing each morning to allow at least one quart of water to flow through a standard size single stage carbon type water filter.  This action will flush bacteria that may have colonized in the water filter overnight (or other periods of inactivity).  A healthy person's immune system can likely kill small numbers of harmful bacteria that may be in the "stored" water; however, a sick person or a person with an impaired immune system should drink only purified water (not just filtered water).  Water purifiers can likely eliminate or deactivate most, if not all, of the harmful type microbes that may get into potable water supply systems.  This is a very important action so do not ignore this exceptionally important warning.

WATER DAMAGE NOTICE:  Any water filter or water purifier unit that is connected to a water line that has constant pressure on it has the potential to leak if any defects occur anywhere in the water tubing or connector devices within the system.  Under-counter water filters and water purifiers typically use small plastic tubing and contain several connector fittings.  A complex system contains more tubing and more connectors so the potential to leak is increased over a single one-stage filter unit (but the one-stage filter cannot do nearly as good a job of cleaning the water as the more sophisticated systems). 

WATER LEAK DETECTOR UNIT:  It is very important to understand that a water leak can occur anywhere in this tubing/connector system.  If a  defect occurs at any time (day or night), substantial water damage may be caused within a few hours.  Left for many hours, the increasing water damage can easily amount to $10,000, $20,000, or more.  This is especially true if one has hardwood flooring in the kitchen and/or adjoining  rooms.  Consequently, Lon Willoughby does not recommend under-counter water filters or water purifiers unless the owner also has a protective leak detector unit installed - can quickly turn off the water at the input plastic water line to the unit whenever a leak is detected. 

This detector unit works by detecting moisture in a plastic "kitty litter pan" that is right below the under-counter unit. If a few ounces of water drips down into the pan (from the water processing unit mounted above the pan), the moisture sensor laying on the bottom of the plastic pan will sense the moisture and automatically turn the water off at the input plastic water line that enables water to flow into the under-counter water processing unit. This water leak detector costs about $70 to $90 (plus installation cost), and it can help prevent a lot of water damage costs.  Consequently, it is a prudent investment to have one installed for any under--counter water processing unit (filter system or purifier system).

COUNTERTOP UNIT:  It is usually easy to install a counter-top water filter or water purifier and this type installation practically eliminates the risk of substantial water leak damage because there is no water pressure going into a counter-top unit when the unit is not being used to produce water (filtered or purified water).  If a leak occurs in a counter-top unit during the time that it is being used, it will likely be detected immediately by the user (sight, sound, or both), and the unit will be turned off immediately, before any significant water damage can occur.  Using a counter-top style filter or purifier unit is a very practical and low-cost way to minimize the potential for water damage.  The counter-top unit also has the important advantage of being a portable unit or system.  It is easy to disconnect the diverter valve from the kitchen sink faucet and take the unit/system to another location for easy and quick connection of the diverter valve to another sink faucet.   

WATER LEAKS:  Over a period of many years, Lon installed two under-counter filter systems to function as a component part of his water distiller system.  After the third serious water leak problem, Lon decided to remove the under-counter type filter system and use only counter-top type water purifiers in his home. Lon experience over many years convinced him that many people across America have water damage from their under-counter filters or purifier units, and Lon knows from personal experience that water damage can be very expensive. Consequently, Lon routinely advises customers about the potential danger of expensive water damage from the under-counter type water filters or water purifiers.   

When we, or our pets, breathe toxic fumes (gases), they go from the lungs directly into the blood and are quickly circulated throughout the body to all vital organs and other body cells (including brain cells). In this situation, the "filtering action" usually performed by the liver and kidneys for ingested liquids is instantly bypassed and we are poisoned by these toxins before they get to the liver or kidneys. Consequently, breathing toxic chemical fumes can be much more harmful than drinking the same chemicals in water.

Shower Filter Using KDF Media:  ABC has an excellent shower filter which utilizes KDF media to efficiently minimize the toxic chlorine gases released into the air when one is bathing in chlorinated water. This excellent filter costs about $42.00 and has a long life span. We can explain how this "shower filter" can also be used for tub bathing.  NOTE:  KDF means Kinetic Degradation Fluxion. 

Lon believes the chlorine (and ammonia) added to municipal water distribution systems can contribute to very serious health problems over time, as indicated by the quotes presented above and below. This is a serious health issue; a word to the wise is sufficient; please take heed and take action accordingly!!!
